Day 269: Super Sunday Hike...And Fish

Lindsay fording the Rahway River on Super Bowl Sunday.

When: Sunday, February 5th (Super Bowl Sunday), from 11am to 2pm
Where: South Mountain Reservation and Diamond Mill Pond near Millburn, Essex County, New Jersey
What: Hiking with Linds...and fishing
Weather: Partly cloudy, mid to high 30's, NE winds to 6mph
Barometric Pressure: 30.16in and steady
Moon: Waxing, just before full
Water Conditions: Fairly clear with a little skim ice

It's good to get outside, especially with Lindsay.

We were originally going to venture a little further from home and take a longer hike, but sleeping until 9am seemed much more enticing. After a nice relaxing morning, it was off to South Mountain Reservation for a familiar walk in the woods.

Seeing as we've done this hike a bunch of times already, we decided to do it backwards for something different. We took the Rahway Trail along the ponds and river up to the falls and followed the Lenape trail back to the car. All in all the circuit was about 6 miles and took us just over two hours.

After that it was time to do some fishing.

There's a small pond on Diamond Mill Road, and although I have never fished there, it looked good enough to hold panfish and bass. There was some skim ice where we parked, but it was still fishable.

I didn't see a single sign of life though.

Yeah, I guess things have pretty much hit bottom as I haven't seen as much as a sunfish in over a week. I think catching fish this time of year takes a bit longer than 30 minutes.

At least the Super Bowl is on tonight.
