A local stream free of ice.
When: Sunday, January 22nd (my 34th birthday), from 3:30pm to 4pm
Where: A small, no-name stream in Lenape Park in Westfield, Union County, New Jersey
What: Fishing with waxworms
Weather: Overcast, 29 degrees, N wind at 9mph
Barometric Pressure: 30.55in and steady
Water Conditions: Fairly clear
One of the things I find most fascinating about this adventure is that when I spend an entire day fishing and come home completely exhausted, I still fish again the next day.
I was wiped and sore when I woke up this morning. Although today is my official birthday, for all intent in purpose I celebrated it with the ice fishing and last night's "man meal." Today was more about getting my writing done, doing chores and cleaning up my mess from yesterday. Luckily, I was still floating on yesterday's high and got all that done with a smile. Countless phone calls and messages helped keep me going too and made it a special day.
After sending my reports in for The Fisherman, I headed out to get my 30 minutes of fishing done. I had half a mind to see if I could find safe ice in Middlesex County or go fish the Raritan River, but I quickly realized it was more important to be close to home. Knowing that Lenape Park had a small stream that would not have ice on it, I headed over there for a quick jaunt. I have done well in the stream with panfish and small bass during the summer and have discovered a few deep pools that I thought might be holding some fish. I was using small hooks tipped with waxworms and a split shot a foot above, but nothing took the offering. I put bait in several spots without luck.
Still, another day in the bag.
And another birthday in the bag.
I have to say over the years, in particular the last 5, my life continues to get exponentially better. Sometimes I'm running around so much that I don't take the time to appreciate how wonderful things are. After having so many people reach out to wish me a Happy Birthday, having the love of my life treat me like royalty all weekend and getting to spend time in some beautiful places with great friends, I can help but wonder what I've done to deserve all this and I am so grateful that life has taken me here.
