The Raritan Bay was looking pretty flat at sunset on Thursday.
When: Thursday, October 6th, from 5:30pm to 6pm
Where: Raritan Bay Waterfront Park in South Amboy
Weather: A few clouds, 69 degrees, 8mph wind from the West
Barometric Pressure: 30.30in (high) and steady
Moon: Waxing, a few days before full
Water Conditions: Clear, couldn't tell the tide
When I was fishing today, I was talking to a man who was amazed that there was anywhere to fish near my home in Union County. I would have almost deemed that a little bit foolish, but just 30 minutes earlier I would have said there's nowhere to fish in South Amboy.
New Jersey continues to surprise me.
After a slightly more positive day at work, I hopped on Mapquest to see if there was anywhere close by to wet a line. To my complete surprise, the Raritan Bay was just a few blocks from where I had been prospecting in the afternoon and even better, there was a park about a half-mile down the road.
Off I went.
I wasn't overly prepared to do any beach fishing, but the bay was was rather calm and my medium-action rod did just fine. I tossed a Yo-Zuri Crystal Minnow and a Rapala Salwater X-Rap for a little over 30 minutes, but not a touch. The stripers really haven't shown up yet, but I was hoping I might stumble upon a resident straggler or a cocktail bluefish.
That's okay though, it's fixing to be an exciting weekend.
