Day 66: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

This bass did not make up for the Sunday morning mishaps.
When: Sunday, July 17th, from 5am to 9:30am
Where: The Passaic River
What: Pike fishing
Weather: Partly Cloudy. Temp quickly rose well into the 80's. Wind from the SW to 10mph.
Moon: Waning. Several days after full.
Water Conditions: Low and stained.

The good thing about Sunday's adventure is that after three years of looking for shore access on the Passaic River, I found it. A hint from a friend and GoogleMaps led me to find a small parking area on the Passaic and what seems like miles of shoreline to fish. Chris Martalus joined me for the adventure.

The bad part was that although I caught three bass and a pickerel,  I did not catch any pike. To make things worse, I had several fish swing and miss my lures and a bunch more come unglued. The two most painful were both pike; one that I got a look at that appeared to be absolutely no less than 30 inches and a monster that had my rod doubled-over before taking me into a snag. Martalus had 2 small pike, but I did not get mine.

The ugly part was that I lost a ton of lures. The fishing space was pretty tight and there were lots of snags in the water, which led to me donating probably $70 worth of Rapalas, Storm Thunder Sticks and Booyah spinnerbaits. I was also completely exhausted from two consecutive days of waking up at 4am, which I'm sure at least partially contributed to my poor casting and undoubtedly fueled my frustration and irratibility.

Normally, catching a handful of iish in a few hours on a Sunday morning would be something to smile about. However, with all the other things that went wrong, I felt somewhat defeated.

It just wasn't my day.

Next Up: Night-fishing for catfish on the Delaware River with Mickey.
