A Walk In The Park(s)

A view from the shore of Lower Echo Lake: just a hop, skip and a jump from our new digs in Union County.
When: Saturday, March 5th, from 11am to 2pm
Where: A handful of parks in/near Union County
What: Hanging out with my sister
Weather: Nice. High into the 50's, partly cloudy with a light breeze.

When my sister and I slated March 5th as a day to get together and get outside, neither of us had even the slightest inkling that Lindsay and I would no longer be residents of Jersey City when that day arrived.

This weekend wound up being our first in Union County and I couldn't think of a better way to have spent it than hanging with my two best friends, Janel and Lindsay.

Lindsay was originally supposed to join us for the walk, but wound up having some errands to run. Janel drove out in the late morning and shortly after we were on our way to the Passaic River Park in Chatham. I had been looking for spots to access the Passaic River for pike fishing and found this park on GoogleMaps. It turned out to be the perfect place to take a walk. There's a trail that runs adjacent to the river and provides some great views that I imagine would be even better once they are green. The trail is not very long, but lucky for us I had a couple other stops to make.

The two other parks that we visited, Nomahagen and Echo Lake, are both in Union County and both minutes from our new home. I'm told that some hefty carp live in the waters in these parks and that one can even tie themselves into a few largemouth bass.

It's no secret that I prefer to fish freshwater and I can't begin to explain how nice it is to have it so close. I wasn't far from the piers on the Hudson in Jersey City, but let's face it, a quiet park with trees is a heck of a lot different than a slab of concrete next to a hotel.

After checking out the parks, Janel and I did some shopping and she was eventually bestowed the honor of being our first dinner guest. I guess "guest" is a relative term since she helped with the dishes and the cooking, but the most important thing is that the first dinner of the first day of my first weekend in our new home was spent happily and enjoyably with both Lindsay and Janel.

Next Up: I'm going to share my recipe carp bait this week before me and Nick Niles go look for some fish this weekend, most likely in Round Valley Reservoir.
